Fighting for Black Liberation
The Problem
Due to years of segregation, oppression, and systemic policies rooted in racism, there exists a massive wealth gap between Black and White people in Cincinnati, and this wealth gap has created barriers to basic human rights: healthy food access, adequate education, and affordable housing/healthcare.
Our mission
We are committed to removing the barriers within Black America that impedes the accessibility to healthy food security, housing, education, healthcare, and wealth.
Nurture Our Own
Our program, Nurture Our Own, is dedicated to ensuring that Black Residents in Cincinnati have access to healthy and nutritious food options. Through the distribution of free food at four different locations on a weekly basis, our primary goal is to tackle the challenges related to transportation limitations, food accessibility, and financial constraints within the community.
We support a
Black women led Cooperative Grocery Store.
In 2017, a chain grocery store shuttered in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Walnut Hills, leaving Walnut Hills in a food apartheid.
Queen Mother’s Market (QMM) has created a regional Buyers Club in Walnut Hills that provides access to healthy, affordable foods. They are working toward opening a Black- and women-led co-op grocery store in the neighborhood by 2024. As a co-op, QMM will be owned by the community and the store’s employees.
We support the implementation of Queen Mother’s Market by supporting and partnering with QMM on several different projects including the Buyer’s Club.
Creating Equity Through Education and Action
We believe strongly in the power of having equity in literacy. Reading is essential for the development of the minds in the Black youth of our society. We have hosted with the help of community partners book clubs, read alouds, Black literature drives, and literacy workshops to improve literacy rates within our community.
Through Liberated Minds Institute, our educational wing, we provide education programs, workshops, and instructional classes that are designed to boost both knowledge and confidence.
In the photo shown, we spoke to UC students about the need for more affordable housing here in Cincinnati and how experiencing homelessness affects individuals.
Homelessness affects Black people at a disproportionate rate compared to white people. Affordable Housing is a significant need here in Cincinnati.
